Carthage Area Hospital recently named its 2017 employee of the year, honoring a woman who has spent the past decade of her professional life working at the hospital.

Myra Fulin, executive assistant for Nursing Administration, joined Carthage Area Hospital on Oct. 8, 2007, after working for five years as a prevention education and volunteer specialist with Lewis County Opportunities, Lowville, in the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Department. Fulin is a New York State Department of Health Certified Rape Crisis Counselor. She was among nine hospital employees honored as an Employee of the Quarter last year.

“We are extremely proud to honor a woman who, each day, strives to live our hospital values,” CEO Rich Duvall said. “Myra Fulin is a team member who consistently delivers more than expected. We are grateful for her service and hope that she will continue to inspire excellence among her peers.

Duvall added that employees like Fulin “remind us how the hospital can’t function without a dedicated support team.”

“It’s often easy to overlook the contributions of our support staff members,” he said. “But, like Myra, some of our best people work very hard to ensure those who deliver patient care have the full support and resources of our organization.”

A North Country native, Fulin was raised in Carthage on a family dairy farm and graduated from Jefferson Community College with an Associate of Science in Human Services.

On being named Employee of the Year, Fulin said she is grateful to her colleagues for having considered her and “sincerely appreciates” the honor, which “came as a great surprise.”

Fulin has two sons — Jordon, 24, of Lowville, and Jared, 22, of Beaver Falls — and two grandsons, a 3-year-old and a 5-month-old. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, reading and camping during the summer. She is an active member of Naumburg Mennonite Church, Castorland, where she is involved in church activities.

About the Employee of the Year Award

Employee of the Year selection is peer-based and limited to a pool of candidates who were selected as Employees of the Quarter during the year. Criteria include embodiment of the organization’s core values of accountability, compassion, customer service, professionalism and teamwork.

All team members employed for more than one year are eligible for nomination by fellow employees, supervisors, auxiliary members, patients, patient family members or visitors. Nominations are reviewed based on each nominee’s embodiment of Carthage Area Hospital’s five core values.

This year, the hospital’s Rewards and Recognition Committee implemented a new selection process through an anonymous vote open to the entire staff.

The Employee of the Year receives a $500 gift card, an engraved desk clock, a bouquet of flowers, a plaque and an invitation to join the senior leadership team for lunch.
